Steve Jobs and the Seven Rules of Success, by Carmine Gallo

A good article for sharing, written by Carmine Gallo:
Steve Jobs' impact on your life cannot be overestimated. His innovations have likely touched nearly every aspect -- computers, movies, music and mobile. As a communications coach, I learned from Jobs that a presentation can, indeed, inspire.
For entrepreneurs, Jobs' greatest legacy is the set of principles that drove his success.
Over the years, I've become a student of sorts of Jobs' career and life. Here's my take on the rules and values underpinning his success. Any of us can adopt them to unleash our "inner Steve Jobs."
Over the years, I've become a student of sorts of Jobs' career and life. Here's my take on the rules and values underpinning his success. Any of us can adopt them to unleash our "inner Steve Jobs."
1. Do what you love. Jobs once said, "People with passion can change the world for the better." Asked about the advice he would offer would-be entrepreneurs, he said, "I'd get a job as a busboy or something until I figured out what I was really passionate about." That's how much it meant to him. Passion is everything.
2. Put a dent in the universe. Jobs believed in the power of vision. He once asked then-Pepsi President, John Sculley, "Do you want to spend your life selling sugar water or do you want to change the world?" Don't lose sight of the big vision.
3. Make connections. Jobs once said creativity is connecting things. He meant that people with a broad set of life experiences can often see things that others miss. He took calligraphy classes that didn't have any practical use in his life -- until he built the Macintosh. Jobs traveled to India and Asia. He studied design and hospitality. Don't live in a bubble. Connect ideas from different fields.
4. Say no to 1,000 things. Jobs was as proud of what Apple chose not to do as he was of what Apple did. When he returned in Apple in 1997, he took a company with 350 products and reduced them to 10 products in a two-year period. Why? So he could put the "A-Team" on each product. What are you saying "no" to?
5. Create insanely different experiences. Jobs also sought innovation in the customer-service experience. When he first came up with the concept for the Apple Stores, he said they would be different because instead of just moving boxes, the stores would enrich lives. Everything about the experience you have when you walk into an Apple store is intended to enrich your life and to create an emotional connection between you and the Apple brand. What are you doing to enrich the lives of your customers?
6. Master the message. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can't communicate your ideas, it doesn't matter. Jobs was the world's greatest corporate storyteller. Instead of simply delivering a presentation like most people do, he informed, he educated, he inspired and he entertained, all in one presentation.
7. Sell dreams, not products. Jobs captured our imagination because he really understood his customer. He knew that tablets would not capture our imaginations if they were too complicated. The result? One button on the front of an iPad. It's so simple, a 2-year-old can use it. Your customers don't care about your product. They care about themselves, their hopes, their ambitions. Jobs taught us that if you help your customers reach their dreams, you'll win them over.
There's one story that I think sums up Jobs' career at Apple. An executive who had the job of reinventing the Disney Store once called up Jobs and asked for advice. His counsel? Dream bigger. I think that's the best advice he could leave us with. See genius in your craziness, believe in yourself, believe in your vision, and be constantly prepared to defend those ideas.

The mysterious death of Simon...
On Friday (30th Sept 2011)evening, I received a shocking call from my colleague, Allan. The moment he touched down on KL International Airport, he called me and told me a saddening news, about our fellow colleague, Simon, had passed away. I was really surprised with such a sudden news. But the most unbelievable part is, it is not any health related death or accidental death. He jumped out from a building and committed "SUICIDE"!!
First of all, I would like to clarify that this colleague of mine, although I am not very close to him, from what I knew about him, he is a lively person that can joke around and won't do such a stupid thing. He is 34 years old, married with 2 kids, one 6 yrs old and another one 3 yrs old. He was posted in Bangkok Thailand for the past 6 months and we didn't see he complained much about working with customers and colleagues there. What is known to us that he seems enjoying his life in Bangkok. I am really curious why a person like him chosed to end his life in such a way, is it because of health problem? Marriage issues? Work stress?Financial issue (he told me that he invested some fish farm in east Malaysia and someone stole his fishes"?
On Monday, I tried to talk to a few colleagues that work with him since Allan called in sick, I try to find out what exactly happened to him? One refuse to talk about it, he just tell me that we have to talk to others if we have problem. But the other few told me what happened to him...the answer is even shocking!
The answer I got is - he was possessed by some evil spirit! Believe it or not!
Quite a number of years ago, my friend told me that his grandma jump out from the building from his apartment despite she barely walk all these years, nobody can explain how come she managed to stand up and climbed on top of the table, and threw herself out. It is a 'mystery' and such mystery happened to my colleague.
After some of my 'investigations' on checking out with other colleagues, I got different version of stories. Some said he jumped from 25th floor, some said 15th floor, but all gave me the similar answer - Simon was possessed by some evil spirit.
A day or two before he kill himself. He was actually seeking asylum in a temple, I think he was seriously 'disturbed' by something. My colleague told me a Thai colleague told her that Simon once told him that he was disturbed by some spirit. The suicide case was published in the local Thailand newspaper and according to the newspaper, the Thai police found some 'devilish drawings' in the room where Simon stays. Another colleague told me that Simon did requested to changed his condo but somehow the evil spirit is following him even after he moved out from the previous apartment he stays. Well, another version of story said that he never moved out from his apartment.
Me, Allan and Simon actually had lunch 3 months ago, now I recalled back that he commented that he is not sleeping well because 'something/someone' bugging him, at that time, I thought his apartment neighbor or house mate is disturbing him, so I did not pay attention at all and I thought he was joking about something else. He love to joke sometimes so I recalled Allan just smile and didn't say much about it. I also notice he wore a rosary that I guess was probably something to fend off any evil spirits. A friend of mine who knew him told me that he shared something on his facebook page about 'Jing Kong Fa Shi", probably some monk's teaching 2 days before he passed away, which is 27 Sept. That was probably his last posting on Facebook. But the mysterious part is - my friend told me that he still connected to a recruitment consultant in Linkedin on 30th Sept, which is the date he jumped!! I feel a bit eerie while typing this... I wonder does he realize what he is doing on that day? Could it be he had loses himself after struggling with the evil spirit? It is just like what we see in the movie, scary and mysterious...
My deepest condolence to him and his family... :(

Bersih 2.0 March
Had a very unforgettable and interesting day in my life. This is because on July 9th, there will be a Bersih Rally, at version 2.0. I have missed the first version so I don't want to miss the second one, I want to be part of the history! I have to blog it while I still have my fresh memories with me.
The purpose of this rally is very simple, I would say more than half of the Malaysians is asking for a simple thing - a FAIR and CLEAN election, that is what 'BERSIH' for. 'Bersih' means Clean in English.
Right before it started, the controlled media is trying very hard to persuade people NOT to participate in such a peaceful march, the police declare it is a illegal rally and it is dangerous when Molotov cocktails and machetes were found together with Bersih T shirts, they try to used all sort of scare and threat tactics on the people.
Days before the rally, I have been trying to persuade friends to go with me, most of them had no idea what is it about? I was quite disappointed because the day before the rally, none of my friends wanted to join, they concern about their safety, being arrested, getting themselves injured or killed, lost of jobs, etc.I totally understand them, but I don't want to force them to go too, luckily, I managed to contact a ex-colleague, he and his friend is going there, so I told him I am ON for the march! Please count me in and don't left me behind.
Things are very unclear before 9th July 2011, as I have friends who even think about stocking up food and water. Really crazy!!
Anyhow, once I get the txt from my colleague on where to gather, I told my mom that please drop me at the LRT station, because I am going for a rally. As predicted, my mom scolded me for being a 'Hero' and 'Idiot', start talking about Tian An Men incident, ask me why the hell I want to go? Only those who don't have a proper job will go, etc... But I am very determined to go, she know she can't stop me at all. She knows I am very hard headed and rebellious.
Well, here I board the train at Bahagia station around 10:45am, the train is very quiet, not many people there... when the train get closer to the heart of the city, I saw more people boarded the train, most of them carried a backpack with a small bottle of mineral water sticking out, some Muslims wore white cap, some uncles wear long pants BUT with sport shoes. Deep in my heart, I knew they are not heading KL for sightseeing.
The streets are pretty quiet around eleven something, I bumped into my friend. We took a table at Nam Heong Chicken rice store, all their staffs are wearing yellow color uniform serving the customers, all shops around the chicken rice store are closed. It makes me wonder if the owner of this shop actually supports the Bersih march?...
Everyone had their lunch of chicken rice in the shops like nothing happens, it was like the calm weather before the storm. But when minutes past, I did see more and more ppl stood near the entrance, they just stood there without a purpose, I can sense they are waiting for orders from someone...
A 70 years old uncle sat in front of me, he is alone. He asked me directly are you guys here for BERSIH while all my friends are away for toilet, I said 'yes' without hiding. He told me he had come for the rally too. He said the government is too much, now all of his kids don't want to come back to Malaysia! I understand how he felt, no parents wanted to leave their kids, but they have no choice, in order for their kids to have a better future out there.
After we have done with our lunch, it is closed to noon time, we saw more and more people coming from every corners, just like those HK gangster movie, you have all the gang members walked to the street from everywhere when they are summoned by the leader. within 15-20 minutes, the street is full with people, the police 'no crossing' line is broken. Ppl just don't give a damn anymore! They started to yell "Hidup Bersih" and "Hidup Rakyat". (Long Live the people)
To my surprise, the turn out rate of Chinese is quite high this time, what we know is Chinese is always scare of dead (kiasi), they try to stay away from trouble, their parents are always overprotecting the kids. The people on the street were united as the truly one Malaysia! Malays, Chinese, Indians, Sabahans, Sarawakians, even a few tourist joined the cause and rally. The crowd filled up the entire road! It was history in making all in a sudden!
All the people started to marched to Maybank building, large group formed with large group and become a larger group. I think it easily shows more than 10k people, not the lies from the police chief and local media, telling us there are only 5-6k ppl turn out for the march. It take real guts to form such a large group despite police and officials had sent out warning to schools, universities, government servants, etc and requested them NOT to participate in this rally even their family members!
The people in the street are getting even more emotional when the first round of water canon fired at the crowd, followed by tear gas canisters. People started to disperse. First time I experience the smell of tear gas, The old Oakley sunglasses I have provide some sort of protection and coverage to my eyes. (I brought this just in case I was caught, I don't know if the police will keep my sunglasses or not). The feel is like someone used pepper water sprayed it to your face, it is not that harmful (maybe I am not standing close enough), but you gotta run for fresher air. The effect will recover after sometime, luckily I brought a handkerchief, I pour some water on it and cover my mouth and started to run away from the scene. I already lost my friends at that time.
......skipped.....
I was trapped in Tong Shin hospital with another few hundred BERSIH marchers for quite some time, they were forced into the building when cannons and canisters were fired to the crowd. I got to know from my friends that they are near the Chinese assembly hall at that time. And guess what, the FRUs fired tear gas canister into Tong Shin hospital! WTF?! What kind of people are they? Can we rely on these enforcers to protect the innocent people? They are peaceful marchers and they didn't damage anything while they stood in the hospital compound. The local printed medias printed LIES on the paper, the police chief claimed that they didn't do such thing, I believe hundreds of marchers can be the eye witness on this, you can even find photos and video clip that shows the proof.
We were forced to retreat further through the slopes behind the hospital. People were running like crazy, heard that police had captured 30+ people who is in the hospital compound. I marched further following the group of 100 people, they started to scattered and walk into different directions, the helicopters above us is monitoring the group movement, how we want to take it down?! But this is a peaceful march, we won't throw a single pebbles even if we can.
Around 5pm, the rally is over, heard there are a large group of members are heading to KLCC. I took a LRT back home when they open the gate. I sat inside the train, telling myself what a day! Feel like falling asleep after the whole day of walking... Salute to those who joined the march, I believe they will remember it for a long time just like me.
The below photos are a bit out of sequence, please start viewing from the bottom...
At 5pm, the street is slowly back to normal...
a hundred of marchers went into the shell station kiosk to buy cold drinks, I also dropped by to stock up my supply of food and water. just in case...
5-6k people attended huh? Are you kidding me?
Marchers were told to moved aside, so they can 'marched safely' to the stadium, but then the negotiater was being tricked, water cannons were fired at them!
The second round of water canon and tear gas are fired to the crowd, that is how I ended up running into Tong Shin hospital. There are Federal Reserve Units and police on both end of the road to trap the marchers.

This aunty is 79 y/o, her name is Anne, retired school teacher joining the march. She was sprayed 4 times on chemical water canons and gas-ed too, poor aunty, I wish I can carry her away the scene, but it was too chaotic at that time, everyone just started to run.
There are disabled marcher too. You think they really have nothing to do in the weekend?
Not sure if that a Bersih welcomed hotel?
Look at how the crowd gather!
The scene when I first arrived before 11am... it was so quiet before it was filled with ppl within 1 hr.

Kulula Airline

Kulula is a low-cost South-African airline that doesn't take itself too seriously. Check out their new livery! And have a read about their Customer Relations.
WHAT A PITY KULULA DOESN'T FLY INTERNATIONALLY - WE SHOULD SUPPORT THEM IF ONLY FOR THEIR HUMOUR Kulula is an Airline with head office situated in Johannesburg.
Kulula airline attendants make an effort to make the in-flight "safety lecture" and announcements a bit more entertaining.
Here are some real examples that have been heard or reported:
On a Kulula flight, (there is no assigned seating, you just sit where you want) passengers were apparently having a hard time choosing, when a flight attendant announced, "People, people we're not picking out furniture here, find a seat and get in it!"
---o0o---
On another flight with a very "senior" flight attendant crew, the pilot said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we've reached cruising altitude and will be turning down the cabin lights. This is for your comfort and to enhance the appearance of your flight attendants."
----o0o---
On landing, the stewardess said, "Please be sure to take all of your belongings.. If you're going to leave anything, please make sure it's something we'd like to have."
----o0o---
"There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of this airplane."
---o0o---
"Thank you for flying Kulula. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride."
---o0o---
As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at Durban Airport , a lone voice came over the loudspeaker: "Whoa, big fella. WHOA!"
---o0o--
After a particularly rough landing during thunderstorms in the Karoo, a flight attendant on a flight announced, "Please take care when opening the overhead compartments because, after a landing like that, sure as hell everything has shifted."
---o0o---
From a Kulula employee: "Welcome aboard Kulula 271 to Port Elizabeth . To operate your seat belt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and pull tight. It works just like every other seat belt; and, if you don't know how to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in public unsupervised."
---o0o---
"In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child travelling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are travelling with more than one small child, pick your favourite."
---o0o---
"Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but we'll try to have them fixed before we arrive. Thank you, and remember, nobody loves you, or your money, more than Kulula Airlines."
----o0o---
"Your seats cushions can be used for flotation; and in the event of an emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with our compliments."
---o0o---
"As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses.."
---o0o---
And from the pilot during his welcome message: "Kulula Airlines is pleased to announce that we have some of the best flight attendants in the industry. Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight!"
---o0o—
Heard on Kulula 255 just after a very hard landingin Cape Town : The flight attendant came on the intercom and said, "That was quite a bump and I know what y'all are thinking. I'm here to tell you it wasn't the airline's fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the flight attendant's fault, it was the asphalt."
---o0o—
Overheard on a Kulula flight into Cape Town , on a particularly windy and bumpy day: During the final approach, the Captain really had to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to The Mother City. Please remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened while the Captain taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate!"
---o0o—
Another flight attendant's comment on a less than perfect landing: "We ask you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal."
---o0o—
An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying our airline". He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?" "Why, no Ma'am," said the pilot. "What is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land, or were we shot down?"
---o0o—
After a real crusher of a landing in Johannesburg , the attendant came on with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Captain Crash and the Crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we will open the door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal.."
---o0o—
Part of a flight attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd like to thank you folks for flying with us today.. And, the next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think of Kulula Airways."
---o0o—
Heard on a Kulula flight: "Ladies and gentlemen, if you wish to smoke, the smoking section on this airplane is on the wing.. If you can light 'em, you can smoke 'em."

年薪十万不是梦
There is a joke abt a chinese advertisement in Bay area from a IT private college while I was in US 10 yrs ago, the tag line is : 年薪十万不是梦!“
My friend told me one of his friends enrolled to the IT course, that was after the technical bubble burst and a lot of dot com companies failed..
So this fella asked the lecturer..:
"老师,我们读完这个课程后,是不是可以拥有年薪十万的工作?"
老师,“年薪十万决不是问题!。。。但是得分三年。。。"
"Sir, after this IT course, do you think we can get a 100k/annum job?"
The lecturer answered: "Of course you can!... But 100k in 3 years time"

"老师,我们读完这个课程后,是不是可以拥有年薪十万的工作?"
老师,“年薪十万决不是问题!。。。但是得分三年。。。"
"Sir, after this IT course, do you think we can get a 100k/annum job?"
The lecturer answered: "Of course you can!... But 100k in 3 years time"

The Real Transporter
Suddenly I feel like sharing this 'Transporter' story that was told by my friend. He saw a wrecked German marque in the workshop, so he asked the mechanic what happened? The mechanic told him the driver of a "tauke" (boss) has met a accident... So how did it happened? According to the driver who is OK after the crashed, he said that he dropped his boss at airport in KL to take a flight to Penang, then the boss expect him could make it to Penang airport and pick him up from there. I was like 'WTH?' after listening to this kind of 'story'! From KL to Penang take less than one hour by plane, after you checked in and out, assume without check in luggage, it will takes you slightly over an hour. I assume the boss reached the airport one hour before boarding, so the driver is given like 2 and half hour to drive from KL to Penang!! You don't want your boss to wait right? Normal driving time if you are cruising at 120km/h will also takes you more than 3 hour , assuming no major traffic. I guess the driver must be 'cruising' at 200km/h in order to fetch his boss on time. This kind of blardy boss really knows how to make full use of his driver!! Doesn't he know that he is risking someone else's life? Why can't he get a rental car there or hire a taxi himself!?

Screen Addiction
Interesting blog from David Callahan, dated Feb 16th, 2011 after attending Mobile World Congress 2011.
Screen addiction: Is less more?
February, Wednesday 16th, 2011 by David Callahan
You see it at every session here in Barcelona – people staring at their smartphone screens, tweeting and chatting, maybe even playing Angry Birds, while presenter after presenter gives their take on the state of the mobile industry.
Now, I’m not being judgmental. I’ll just leave that to someone else – in this case, one Hampus Jakobsson, co-founder of TAT. Speaking at a session on Mobile Innovation in 2020, Jakobssson openly wondered whether the ICT industry – those who create the networks, services and devices – is heading in the wrong direction.
Recalling a presentation he did last month, Jakobsson said he put up a quote on the screen, read it aloud and then asked how many people in the audience had just tweeted it. “About 50 percent of them raised their hand,” he says. “So I said, ‘Did you hear the sentence?’ Then a lot of people lowered their hands, afraid that I would point to them to ask them to repeat it.
“We’re starting to live in a world of interruption technologies. We’re starting to talk to our devices rather than each other, and we have to start thinking about what is the future we really want to create for our children, our colleagues, our friends? Do we want a future where people just stare at their screens, or a future where people actually talk to each other?”
Jakobsson suspects that by adding more and more to the mobile platform, we are reducing communication between people. “Suddenly people are communicating in 140 characters or less. We’re compressing ourselves to machines instead of talking to each other about how we feel.
“We who create these devices, services and networks … have to make sure we create tools that give us more time with each other and less time with machines. If we don’t start thinking about this today, technology will be the fats and sugars of 2020.”
After a public shaming like that, it’s easy to snicker at the screen-staring crowd. But I tend to think that no machine, regardless of how attractive, can stand very long in the way of human beings seeking personal contact. Maybe sometimes we bite off more online social interaction than we can chew – maybe we get lost in Wikipedia or news feeds way too often. Maybe we are seduced by the way an online session implies the availability of everyone we know in the world. But maybe we just need better tools to manage our insatiable curiosity about what’s around the corner.
